Paul, I can echo Traveller's comment from yesterday. I love the light, the diagonal composition and the fact that in spite of high contrast there is a broad spectrum of tonality. Perhaps one of my favorites. -Gerald

The lighting on the eggs looks quite good to me. No blown highlights, nice texture and I see good detail. The tray , I like the deep shadows. Not much detail. There's just a peak of somethng ever so slight.

According to my non calibrated monitor the blacks are right where I though they should be, I can see texture in them but not any real detail which is what I wanted. It's the whites on the right side of the image that I'm not happy with. I was trying for a even bright light on both side of the image but with a soft shadow off the carton from the left side key light. My skill set just isn't quite there YET! Paul

But isn't that always the problem, Jim, there is Always another possible tweak...maybe good, may bad? I am not disagreeing with what you are saying, or with your ever present cheerful and good help....but rather, I'd like to identify the source of the dissatisfaction we all feel from time to time, even with our best work.

There is always another possible version. I am sure that Paul has played with this and played with this and worked on it some more. I am a little surprised that he even actually painted the egg carton, (I thought it was a photoshop trick magnificently done....lol)

What do you think Paul?

You're just Done, no?

Best Wishes, Traveller

I think the eggs are dead on. If it were me, I'd try to brighten the deep shadows in the histogram a bit using Lightroom or Capture One. Or maybe the levels need a tweak on the black end.
You could also do something in PS by selecting the carton and brightening that a bit.

I am sorry Paul but you are far too critical of yourself. This shows planning, foresight, excellent execution of this idea....go gentle in every spring day. Best Wishes, Traveller

I did paint the carton using a flat black paint so it would not reflect the light back to the camera. It really doesn't have the wow effect I was hoping for when I envisioned the shot but the challenge needs entries so I put it in regardless.
I used a single 430ex speedlight on low power and shot through vellum to soften and spread the light and a reflector to work as fill. The fill wasn't very filling, I really wanted more front side BG light but after 100 or so shots I realized it's not getting any better so I gave up trying. PA

Nicely lit eggs; often a tough subject.

Did you paint the carton?
