In April 2016 I spent four days on a ranch in the Sand Hills of Nebraska photographing Short-tailed Grouse. An additional bonus was a lek of Greater Prairie Chickens. Nearing the end of the breeding season, the birds were very active. Air travel being what it has become, I decided to travel as light as possible which meant leaving my long and heavy lens at home. These images were captured entirely with the new Canon 400mm f/4 DO II. This lens with a x1.4 III extender plus the extra reach of my Canon 7D Mk 2 turned out to be nearly perfect for birds this size. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed capturing them.
