Oban, a popular resort in Argyll and Bute, originating from mesolithic times. The modern town grew up around a distillery, founded in 1794. (The chimney
in the bottom centre is part of that distillery) It was an important naval base during World War II, and played a significant role during the Cold War
because the first Transatlantic Telephone Cable came ashore at Gallanach Bay nearby, carrying the Hot Line between the US and USSR presidents.
Since the 1950s, the main industry has been tourism, and also the hub for CalMac (Caledonian MacBrayne) ferries to many of the islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides.
