Teide is an active volcano, having most recently erupted in 1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the northwestern Santiago rift.
It is classified by the United Nations Committee for Disaster Mitigation as one the 16 so-called Decade Volcanoes, because of
its proximity to several large towns, including Garachico, Icod de los Vinos and Puerto de la Cruz.
Teide is the most visited part of Spain.
