Built originally in the 7th century by the Byzantines on the site of a Roman fort. The first historical reference to the castle was in 1191,
when Richard the Lionheart captured it on his way to the Third Crusade. It was later extended by the Lusignans. The Venetians turned it into a vast fortress,
later occupied by the Turks in 1570.
