St. Hilarion Castle

St Hilarion Castle – considered to be the main castle in Cyprus, and the one with the most impressive architecture. Also known as Dieu d’Amour,
it was originally a monastery named after a monk believed to have chosen the site for his hermitage; a church was built here in the 10th century.
The second name comes from a popular medieval pun: in the Middle Ages the area was known as Didymos, which means twins, after the two peaks separating
the valley. The name was mispronounced by the first Latin settlers and the name Dieu d’Amour became widely used.

St Hilarion was one of a number of castles built on the highest points along the coast to protect from Arab attacks, and included castles in Kyrenia,
Buffavento and Kantara. The castle existed in the time of Richard the Lionheart's campaigns in Cyprus, in 1191, was later fortified by the Byzantines
and further upgraded under the Lusignans, who used it as a summer residence, though much of it was dismantled during the 15th century by the
Venetians to reduce the upkeep costs.

It is said that Walt Disney’s production of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was inspired by the St Hilarion Castle.
