The remains of the ancient port of Amathous, founded between the 10th and 8th centuries BC. Over the centuries, it was inhabited by Greeks, Phoenicians, Egyptians and Jews.
After the arrival of Christianity on Cyprus, in the late 4th century AD, St Tychon founded a church here. It was destroyed in the 7th century by Arab raiders.
In later times, the site was used as a quarry, with huge stones being transported to Egypt for use in the construction of the Suez Canal.
The American consul, General Luigi Palma di Cesnola, further plundered the site in the 1870s, looking for treasure.
