1927 Sunbeam 1000hp

One of the first purpose built Land Speed Record cars and the first to reach 200 mph. Driven by Major Henry Segrave.
The car was powered by two 22.5 litre V12 Matabele aero engines, each delivering 435 bhp. These were positioned in-line,
with the driver’s cockpit in between. Transmission was via a 3-speed gearbox, drive shaft and chains. Actual power was
around 900 bhp, but the 1000 bhp title probably appealed more to the Sunbeam directors. The record attempt took place on
March 29th 1927, with 30,000 spectators watching from nearby sand dunes. During the first attempt, wind caused the car
to swerve and skid so violently that Segrave had to drive the car into the sea to slow it down. The speeds achieved
averaged 203.8 mph, a new Land Speed Record.
