Paestum

Temple of Hera, built in the classical Doric style. Also known as the Basilica, though that term was an
18th century invention, when it was thought to be a civic building. This was the first temple to be built
in Poseidonia, some time during the century following the foundation of the city. Hera was the goddess of
fertility and creativity. Popular legend has it that childless couples would flock here at night, in the
belief that making love within the shrine of the goddess of fertility would ensure pregnancy.
