Sergiev Posad, the Trinity Monastery of St Sergius.
Founded around 1345 by Sergius of Radonezh, the Trinity Monastery in the town of Sergiev Posad is one
of Russia’s most important religious centres and places of pilgrimage. The monastery was closed down
during the Soviet era, but allowed to open again in 1946, when it became the headquarters of the
Russian Orthodox Church, until 1988.
