Mural Painting in Nan จิตรกรรมฝาผนังเมืองน่าน

Nan had long been an important principality in the Lanna region since the
Sukhothai period. According to the history of Muang Nan included in the ancient
Thai chronicles of the National Library version compiled by the Fine Arts
Department, it was originally built in 1282 A.D. by Phaya Pu Kha at the place
Called Vara Nakhon, which is in the present-day Silaphet sub-district Pua district,
Nan province. It is said that the principality had altogether 64 rulers throughout its
long history. The center of the principality was later moved to the area of
Present-day Phuphiang Chae Haeng, and its last center was on the bank of Nan
River as it is found at present. Originally its official name was Nanthaburi Sri
Nakhon Nan, which is now shortened as Nan.
In Nan there are two important wat with beautiful murals. They are
wat Phumin and wat Nong Bua. wat phumin which was a wat Luang (royal wat)
stands Nai wiang sub-district, Muang district. On the other hand wat Nong Bua
a wat of the local villagers is in pakha sub-district, Tha wang PHA district,
about 42 km. to the north of the provincial center. The murals of the two wats are
equally masterful, and they are covered in this particular volume of the series.
Il May 1986, the editorial staff of Muang Boran Journal went to phrae and
Nan provinces to survey and take pictures of the archaeological sites in the region.
Beside many new finds, we also discovered a new mural site at wat chang kham
in Muang district, Nan province. The murals had long been covered with time and
only last year during the renovation of the hall it became known that the hall had
murals. Including this new site there are three mural sites from the time of
Sing Rama V in Nan province. They are Wat phumin, Wat Nong Bua, and
Wat Chans Kham.

Wat Phumin is different from the rest of the wats in Thailand. The ordination and assembly halls are put together in one building which is constructed on a cross-shaped plan.
The building has square center and has four equal projections with identical projections at cardinal points. Impressive Naga balustrades are made along the steps leading to the doors, which is the typical of the Buddhist hall of the north. This charming architecture was reproduced on One Baht Bill in brown hues during the time of World War II in the 1940's.

At the center of the hall is a square Chedi. On the four sides of the Chedi are four identical Buddha images facing out the doorways, seated back to back in the gesture of enlightenment.

These are painting of Khatthana-Kumara Jataka (one story from 50 of life before Buddha), in Wat Phumin, Nan province, North of Thailand.
