This is fascinating. My maternal grandmother, Annie Altman (or Altermann) was born to a large family in Dvinsk in the 1880s; her aunt, Pessa, was married to my grandfather's brother, Simon Sinitsky (not from Dvinsk) and arranged for Annie to come over and marry my grandfather in the first decade of the 20th century. I have previously found out so little about the town, and now some of my heritage, sad as it is, has been revealed.

This picture reminds me so much of similiar shots of my father's family in Dvinsk. Apparently, we also had family who emmigrated to S. Africa, but those links were probably lost in the ashes in 1941.
