Litchfield

Litchfield National Park is approx 100km south west of Darwin in the Northern Territory Top End.
Its main attractions are fairly close together and reachable by bitumen roads so Litchfield can
easily be done as a day trip from Darwin. It is home to several scenic water falls and rockholes.

Buley Rockholes is a series of cascading waterfalls and rock holes (plunge pools) along
Florence Creek. A pretty spot!

Florence Falls is a double water fall leading to a popular swimming hole. We took the shorter
walk to the lookout rather than the steeper walk to the bottom of the falls and plunge pool.

Wangi Falls spills over the cliffs of the Tabletop Plateau into a large plunge pool that is
surrounded by monsoon rainforest. It is popular for swimming and makes a great backdrop for
a picnic or walk. The pool is apparently home to smaller Freshwater Crocodiles. But during the
wet season (high water levels and heavy rains) there is risk of strong currents and Saltwater
Crocodiles moving in making it dangerous to swim. This can see the plunge pool closed at times.

The gateway to Litchfield is a pretty town called Batchelor where we spent a night at the
peaceful Butterfly Retreat with its shady tropical gardens and butterfly enclosure.
