In going through some old family papers recently we came across a 9x12 envelope addressed to my great grandfather, Dr. Peter J. Popoff, in care of the Russian Consulate in New York City. According to the stamp on the front of the envelope it was passed by the watchman on duty on September 27, 1889, with the instruction to "PASS BEARER WITH PACKAGE." Dr. Popoff, aside from being a medical doctor educated in the US at NYU Medical School, was a Cossack, born of the Don tribe. He was an intellectual, a linguist, and politically savvy. He may have simply been asked to translate the newspaper included. These are a few samples of what we found.
Amazing images very captivating, I can just sit and stare at them for some reason. I just had one of my friends here at the office read the article for me (he's Russian)as I was curiouse and wanted to share it with him. This was a nice discovery, our heritage can offer us some remarkable insights.
