Vetter Windmill

Hermosa Beach, California

This windmill was erected in 1903 in order to provide irrigation for the plants on a flower farm, located on in Hermosa Beach. They raised carnations, tulips and other flowers there.
After the owner's death, the flower farm stood vacant until the late 1960s, when real estate developers began looking at the property for housing.

A group of citizens formed to preserve the old windmill, forming the Save the Windmill Committee.
In 1969 it was moved to Greenwood Park, near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Aviation Boulevard, where the windmill has stood ever since. It was reconstructed in 2000 after it had begun to deteriorate.
This is a very small park on a corner by a small shopping center that includes Trader Joe's and Starbucks. It's a short walk from my house, but I never stopped to look at it before and I didn't even know why it was there.

Excellent image and interesting information you looked into the Windmill and found there was a bit of history attached to it.

Nice shot. Glad they preserved it. So many SoCal beach communities were dependent on growing flowers. "V"

such a pleasing artifact, and well worth preserving...it seems out of place here, yet outshines the retail buildings..
