Ancestral seat of the MacDonalds of Sleat. Chiefs of the clan MacDonald have had a residence here
since the 17th century. The white section is the original MacDonald House built around 1790.
In the 1800s an extension to the mansion was added in the Georgian Castle style. A fire in 1855 destroyed much of the original mansion and then a mock Gothic extension was added to fill in the gap.
The structure you see here standing apart (with the red vines growing on it) was an entryway as the
building extended all the way across the gaps you see now. The mansion fell into disrepair in the 1930s and was partially demolished in the 1980s for safety reasons. All of the gray portion is just
ruins now. The white section is used for offices.
