On Duty
(07.03.05)

I liked the textures in this image. I've shared before that I live in a rather unusual town and it attracts some unsual characters. Hey, I moved here ;). Mostly it attracts history buffs who know a small corner of history, but what makes it different is they want to dress and act it out in public just for fun. To the right, meet Mr. R. He does NOT work for Colonial Williamsburg, just likes to dress up and walk the streets. In most towns folks would probably cross to the other side of the street, but in my town, he attracts folks like flies to honey. "Are you a General? Can I see your sword? and other such questions. When I first saw Mr. R, the thought immediately came to mind.. OMG, predecessor of Mr. T. I mean look at that necklace and how about the horse mane in that head piece. ;)

Now here's a stumper for you history buffs. The necklace is authentic. What was its purpose? Yeah, of course I had to ask him.

P.S. Thanks for the comments, you guys are so creative. Gary I would not want to compete against you in a game of Balderdash. Ok, the answer. Mr. R is in uniform of an officer, Major rank. The necklace indicates when an officer is on duty. Without the Bling Bling, he's off duty. ;)

Excellent. It looked like a Dali-esque distorted asbtract in the thumbnail.

I'm coming here late, so I won't make a smart astronaut comment like others before me. Well done image, and thanks for the history lesson!

Wonderful detail... the colour and material is especially realistic looking.

Now, I think it is a gorget, which by this time was really a ceremonial thing, like a badge - but it came originally from the neck guard in a suit of armour

Obviously, it was to cover his mouth, but not his nose, when he was talking strategy with his staff within eyesight of the enemy. It evolved into the baseball mitt over the face that we now see when a pitcher is talking with his catcher.

or mp3 player.
