South Vietnam tour 1968-69

I served in South Vietnam as a helicopter pilot and aircraft maintenance officer with the 605th Trans. Company ADS (Aircraft Direct Support), from November 1968 to November 1969. . These photos were taken during this time. They represent what I saw. Most of the color photos were taken as slides using my Canon FT-QL purchased in South Vietnam in 1968. I copied them to digital using my Fuji S602Z with my old Canon slide adapter attached. . These slides were in rough shape when I converted them to digital. two years ago. I apologize for the condition of these photos, but they are all that I have. *

I found a ADS 605th Trans CO patch in my dads things and looked it up on the net and was surprised and happy to find this with his photo. Stationed with 82nd A Co.Jan-Dec 69. There were a few incoming rockets, couple accidents with grenades, couple C Co. guys drowned on a hot day in rock pit. I was with Finance office by day, we took our turns guarding inside perimeter, HQ, offices at night. Aviation groups, Rangers patrol outside perimeter.. Were herbicides, sprays used inside Phu Loi ? I do not remember much vegetation or mosquitoes. Thanks for pictures

I was in the LSI Assessment and Recovery crew during 1968 and early '69 until they decided it was getting a little too 'hot' for us civilians at Phu Loi and moved the bunch of us to Bien Hoa. After all that work we did building our hootches and bomb shelter. When a Huey or Loach went down in the jungle we went out in a Huey to assess the condition and determine if it could be saved and rebuilt. If it could they called in a Chinook to haul it back to Phu Loi. If it couldn't, we would salvage anything worth saving and the GIs would blow it up so the the VC couldn't use anything from it. I saw a lot of hootches in and around Phu Loi with Olive Drab aluminum roofs. I sure would like to hear from my hootch-mate Jack Boettcher or any of the other Phu Loi LSI guys. I don't think there are many of us left. We had some pretty wild poker games back then.

Dian - I served at Camp Holloway in the 344th ASD (Airfield Support Detachment) as an Air Traffic Controller from November 1968 to November 1969. I do not remember an outfit called the 344th ADD. Tom Gordon - I didn't realize the army had 2 x 344th ASD companies in country at the same time. One in Pleiku, Camp Holloway and one in Pho Loi. Interesting

Brings back memories, I was NCOIC of the 257th Med Det.(DS) at Phu Loi base camp mid '67 to early '69, SPC 5, retired as SFC in '81. A Dr. from the 5th ARVN Inf. Div. was my best friend for years. He became an LTC and Cdr of the Dental Service for South Viet Nam. My second tour was at 39th Med Det in Ahn Khe and Pleiku (71st Evac. Hosp.) my second tour in 70 - 71.

Big John was the Club Custodian at Long Binh base in Saigon where my rock band Savages from Sri Lanka performed several times. I read Big John was arrested for bribery and corruption and was imprisoned around 1970. Is this true and is Big John still alive and well. Thanks for the help locating big John in advance.

I work with a man who is looking for a serviceman who served with the 147th at Vung Tau in 1969-1970 or so. His name is Hung Tran and he was probably 5 or 6 at the time. Dave, Impressive site. I served Jul. 66 till Apr67 with the 1st. Cav.as an OV-1 crew chief. I am hoping to find someone on your site that knew a James B.L.(Brian Lawerance) Makin. He was KIA in a rocket mortor attack on Mar.14 1968 (his birthday). He was an Englishman and not yet a citizen of the US but on permanent visa so to evade the infantry enlisted for aviation maintainence. We were in fixed wing school at Ft. Rucker together. I went to Ft. Hood he went to Ft. Hoochie coochie Ariz.. I have no idea how to spell Huachuca but will give it a shot. Just trying to get some info on an old buddyand his time in Phu Loi. (Brian Lawerance) Makin who was KIA March 14 1968 at Phu Loi. I assume you had OV-1s there at that time. Am wondering if anyone on your site would have any info about James they would share with me. James was a small English man and not yet a US citizen. Enlisted to try and stay out of the infantry. In civilian life he was a sports car mechanic in Charleston South Carolina. I was re-assigned from Phu Bai to Phu Loi in Jan 1972. Upon arrival I was told Avionics was over strength and no room for me. I had to sleep in the end of a large building, mostly collapsed from a recent rocket attack, on a wire bed and no bedding or pillow. After about a week I was given the end of a barracks, with a monkey chained directly above me, and some bedding and a pillow. Basically was out processed there for about a month, to Long Binh for final out processing and a freedom bird ride home. I returned to Vietnam 2002 -2004 and mostly worked oil and gas service company in Vung Tau, Ho Chi Minh. One day I hired a moped from Saigon to Cu Chi Tunnels Memorial and shot one of our 50 cal's for a dollar a round. I got the impression that somehow we actually won that war in very strange ways. Anyhow welcome home brothers and I appreciate this site.

Does anyone know anything of a 344th ADD unit that was stationed at Camp Holloway? Supposedly my brother was with this unit. My brother, Ronald Keith Jones from Arkansas, did two tours with this unit during 1969 processing out on the 13th of Apr 1972 only to lose his live 16 days later in a car wreck. Does anyone remember #1 - if there was, in fact, a 344th ADD unit and #2 - what their mission was? Most importantly, does anyone remember a Keith Jones? Conversation within the family has him as a door gunner and I want to know for sure or ANYTHING about him. I served with the 120th AHC in Long binh, Vietnam from August 68 to Apr 69. I was a crew chief on a UHI-D, with a door gunner named Hatch, from Las Vegas. Before that I was with the 222 CAB, as a door gunner, UHI-D in Vung Tau, and before that the 135th AHC as a door gunner. 135th moved to blackhawk. I served in Vietnam from Oct.67 to Apr. 69

Loved your Phu Loi photos, have some myself from 66-67 still tent city. Also photos of Saigon, Phu loi village, various 1st inf div bases, hueys, equipt etc. My favorite photo is of huey instrument panel, altimeter reads 0. Actual altitude 10,000 ft directly above Phu loi. Pilot contacted Phu loi tower for landing, tower replied "not on scope", pilot's reply "Look up". Remember waving to passing 707. Really cold w/ the door open. Served w/ A Co 1st Avn Bn 1st Inf Div as door gunner at Phu Loi

David, I was wondering if you might recall an incident when the soundproofing from around the transmission housing took out the tail rotor of a UH-1D on a test flight. I was the repairman that went on that flight. I had started to climb back to snap the soundproofing back in place when it went out the cargo door. I don't remember the pilot that day, but he made a great landing on the wet grass. Jim

thanks for that picture members of the 605th i remember when it was taken but i don't ever remember seeing it i don't remember you but i remember going to a school to work for the day we didn't do a whole lot of work as i remember but we got off base for the day i worked (i use the term loosely) in the hanger in the machine shop i was a 44e20 i was in the maintenance platoon i was friends with a guy named bill pepin and irwin(jacko) jacobawitz i was with the 605th from sept 68 to sept 69

I was at Phu Loi Mar 68-April 69 and remember the periodic spraying (it wasn't suppose to hurt you). Its a fact that in '68-69 the heaviest concentration of agent orange was dropped in III Corps. The VA is a hassle but if your affected you deserve compensation.

Went back to school after Viet Nam, picked up a Master's in Government. Surprisingly, Vietnam did change me. Many good friends, I wish I would have kept in touch. I do remember going from Saigon to camp on a motorcycle I had bought, travel back alone, a little scared...

Wonderful website! I am a teacher on Long Island and I collect aviation uniforms. I have a first model Nam jungle jacket with the 611th patch and Captains rank. it has the initials URV on the inside but the name tape is missing. Anyone know a pilot with the initials URV? 1969 ... served w/ HQ, 34th GS Group. Their Circle 34 BOQ was located within the 3rd Fld Hospital compound. Not seen in "Saigon from the air" is H-3 to the left of where the photo was taken from; straight ahead at the intersection on the right is 3rd Fld Hosp and Circle 34 BOQ; and on the lower left just before the intersection is the H-pad used by 3rd Fld Hospital. Newport BOQ is the white 'highrise' straight ahead. Also, I believe this was taken in the flight pattern into H-3. Flew it often. Amazing what one can recall after 40 years.

Was Tower Chief at Hotel-3 (12/69-5/70) with 313th ASD (165th CAG-US Army). Your picture appears to have been taken from south of the heliport. The tower would be on the left (west) side of this picture. The heliport was home to 120th AHC, "The Deans", who flew mostly VIPs MACV/USARV; it also housed the 34th General Support Group who performed Depot and above maintenance on US Army choppers. At the 12 o'clock position, I believe is Camp Alpha, where most Army guys processed through for R&R in the southern half of RVN, Cam Rahn Bay took the northern half. Good job!

Great photos - brings me back to Phu Loi - I was there from Aug 68 thru Aug 69 - Signal corp 1st lt., on bn staff as S2, commo ofcr, security plt ldr , liaison to An My School! - also wore the red hat with the security platoon badge. Picts of An My school were particularly interesting - I have a photo of the front of An My school hanging on my ofc wall along with a ltr from the Mr. Tinh, the Principal, thanking us for our support. The 3/4 ton truck, HQ10, in your picts parked in front of the school was the vehicle assigned to me when I was there - again - great picts , glad I found your site! Transportation MOS 1LT assigned to Phoenix Program from Feb 1969 to Jan 1970 in Go Cong Province in IV Corps. Was attending Phoenix School in Vung Tau in March 1969 when enemy 122MM rockets bracketed compound and destroyed planes on the nearby airfield. When requesting location of protective bunkers, school officials replied, "This is Vung Tau, we do not need bunkers." Apparently, the VC on a nearby island did not get the message. Your pics certainly brought back memories.

Was with 82nd Airborne at Phu Loi 11/68 - 7/69. Enjoyed the pictues. We took over abondoned French quonset huts when we got there. My office had a very faded red cross symbol - probably a medical facility for the French. The Japanese built the airstrip at PhuLoi during WWII.

Chuck Prudhomme : I was a UH1 crewchief with Pipesmoke in 68. While rigging a downed UH-1 west of Ben Cat on Oct 22 68 the CH47 was shot down. While responding to the crash in a swamp Johnson and I were hit and aircraft was damaged. I went on to flight school returning to RVN with 3/17th air cav. flew for 33 years Army/ Coast Guard/ EMS/ Fire. great site!

great site - good job man o man am i confused. I started out with the 539th in mar 70 and was attached to pipesmoke flying on the hook 010 and 985. later in 70 transfered to HHC to jump over in order to slick crew and rig with pipesmoke. at some point of time i was transfered to the 165th but still attached to pipesmoke. was there in mar or april of 72 to pick up the brass and haul ass. ended up in Vung Tau for a month.

I was with the 605th from about Feb. 1969 to early 1970 when I extended for the 128th. AHC next door to the 605th. and crewed a UH-1H for the Tomahawks for 6 months. The tour with the 605th. was my second tour and the first 6 months I trained the enlisted people to work on Hueys since when I arrived the civilians were doing almost all the maintenance. From 6 months on I was the crewchief on the company helicopter so we must have flown together. My AC was usually Cpt. Ammons I believe.

I am now in Vietnam were I just remarry, a beautiful lady here, I was here in 1967-68, I was with the First Single, at Pho Loi, I now am liveing near Saigon, OK to some HCMC but for me it all ways be Saigon, I went back to Pho Loi with my wife son, and now also mine. I been trying to see if the bunker we bulit was still there. I love to see it again, I can show some picture of Pho Loi as I was able to see it this year. any one from there in that time I love talking with you. US Army. I was stationed at the 605th my first month in country assigned to security platoon. I remember on my 4th or 5th day in country being sent to bunker on the 539th perimiter for guard duty. Had no idea what to expect, don't think I even blinked the whole 9 hours while on guard duty. After como break I was leaning against the bunker and fell asleep. I cought hell from the sgt of the guard but we were officialy of guard duty after como break. Sure didn't enjoy guard duty for 30 days. I was then stationed at the 539th for the remining tour and then some. Time in country Nov. 69 to Feb 71. I wish I could remember the names of all the great guys I worked with and guys who were on my crew. Any of you see this message please email me. I served with the 605th from late Nov. 66 then transferred to the 20th Trans. some time in July or Aug. 67. They were just laying out the big hanger when I left. Alot of good guys served in the 605th at that time.

I worked for Pan American Airways and lived with the 99th Replacement Battallion across from USARV Headquarters in Long Binh from October 1969 through December 1969. Pan Am had a ticket office on base. I was a ticket office supervisor with several Vietnamese and Chinese-Vietnamese women reservations/ticket agents. We made flight reservations and wrote tickets in a quonset hut office for Army vets who were returning to the states via MAC flights (they could then arrive at US air bases and go immediately to civilian airports for their flights home). We also had an office at the air terminal at Bien Hoa air base. I lived in a 2x4, plywood and screen wire BOQ overlooking the cold water latrine where Vietnamese women daily burned our crap with diesel fuel. Sanitation was very smoky. There was a bunker on the opposite side of the building. The Viet Cong would lob rockets almost every night at about 3am. The first one would wake me, I started running for the bunker with the second and the third one hit just before I made it. I did that a few times before just doing a count and then going back to sleep since I knew I would never make it and they never lobbed more than three. When I left to go to Danang on our rotation, I was relieved to find the rockets only came in there every two to three weeks. It was a lot safer there! Plus in Danang I lived with the Marines where a Gunny Sargent loaned me an M-16 with three clips and a 50 caliber Grease Gun with three clips "just in case". However, the mosquitoes were the problem in my BOQ there and rifles and submachine guns just aren't effective in combating those enemies. I sometimes joke about being a "semi-vet" since I lived in a combat zone with America's Finest - our Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine vets - and experienced hostile fire with regularity. My son, who is an Air Force IP or Instructor Pilot in the T-38 (was an F-15E pilot for three years in Lakenheath, Italy (over Kosovo), in Kuwait (over Iraq) and other assignments) doesn't like it. However, I have many friends who are vets who never experienced hostile fire, so even if I was only a civilian, I share many experiences and emotions with my brothers who carried arms in Viet Nam. God bless each of you for your service and I wish you health, prosperity and peace for the rest of your lives.

I was with the 605th from May 67 to May 68. Worked in the motor pool a couple months then in a small welding shop next to the hanger in the motor pool area. Great duty with an old civilian named T.R.Barney. All we had were torches to weld with but repaired many helicopter parts and misc. jobs for company. Lived with a great bunch of guys in what was known as the party hootch for good reason.Never liked the red hats they had us wear for awhile.Spent one month on guard duty on perimeter near tower at main entrance. I welded all the machine gun mounts in the bunker windows. I remember the Nancy Sinatra show at the entrance to the hanger and the Bob Hope show at Cu Chi. I remember well one rocket attack that hit our co. area fairly hard only to find out that it was our own fire that hit us.I have a piece of shrapnel that ripped a hole in our tent hit my mosquito net rod on my bunk bending it to a 90> angle and it layed on my bunk. Great job with this web site, thanks for all those brothers who served and stood up for the cause, even though it got fuzzy sometimes. I am searching for any information or how to obtain information about an accident that occured in the practice sod area along side the runway at Phu Loi Mar 5 or 9, 1969. I was transitioning into the OH-6A when my IP, who name escapes me, when he rolled the aircraft. The aircraft was destroyed, but we manages to escape with minor injuries. I can see my hooch in the 605th, the "club", our shop and bunkers. I was with Avel Central mar.68-Mar.69, part of 539th (detachment) housed at 605th. Lost all my photos taken with the Minolta bought at the PhuLoi PX, which I still have..the camera...not the photos...nasty divorce. Thanks for the photos. It's been 40 years and I still remember almost all the details of Phu Loi, I was stationed at HHB 23rd Artillery Group, 1-68 thru 5-69 we were in charge of 6 arty batallions in III Corp. We were located Just a few hundred yards south and in the middle of the runway. I have lots and lots of pictures of the area and all those cobras and hueys and the string of 5 choppers that you could see flying from dawn to dusk.

David, your site has been very touching. I was in the 605TH from Oct. '71 till early 1972, I was an airframe repairman(68G20) & had previously been at Chu Lai(176th AHC) & survived typhoon Hester. I worked mostly in the Big Hanger. As Supply Sgt. Joe Scott mentioned in his message, I to was also envolved in several conveys, turning in beds,lockers,etc at Long Bien. My hooch was near the main gate, spent many nights in the gate guard tower. My first experience with a Starlight Scope was on guard in the tower. Also, I have a couple of pic's of "Slick" the python and of the repainting of the Company(?) jeep. I hope to get my pic's on the web in the near future. Wishing you the best with "your kids". David: Just surfed in on a link. Great set of photo's ! Used to hit Vung Tau now and then on an ammo ship and park out off the coast line. I remember that you had to back on board before dark, the VC used Vung Tau for R&R too! I also recall that jets used to bomb the hell out of the mountain range at dusk on what seemed a daily routine. Hi, I left Ft Hood, Tx in Feb, 1967 bound for Oakland, Ca. Boarded the Gen Gordon, and arrived off shore of Vung Tau early March, 1967. Did guard duty at Long Binh amo-dump just after it was blown up by VC. Tranferred to Pho Loi with service at Hqs & Support Co, 610th Maint Battalion through Tet Offensive in February 1968. For the time that I was at the 610th Maint Battalion, we would hear the engines of the choppers warming up in the early morning hours. A little bit later, one after the other, lines of choppers would take off, and again during the late afternoon hours, these choppers would arrive in lines again to settle down from another day of flying. I remember standing in line for the mess hall and receiving fire from never seen VC off in the tree line. I remember the frequent VC mortar attacks, and their continual attempts to damage the parked choppers. My most vivid memories of Phu Loi was viewing the few helicopter remains in the 'bone yard' when I first arrived in March of 1967. You could walk through the area then. Very disturbing was the condition of the choppers, bullet holes, and blood. There were only a half dozen chopper frames there when I first arrived. On my last day at Phu Loi, I drove by the 'bone yard' and cannot forget how many frames were stacked up like so many lifeless piles of cordwood, and how many lives were forever changed for the people and families of those who flew in those machines. Thank you for posting the pictures. I had forgotten how the place looked. The 610th Maint Battalion was located on the perimeter, probably north of the runway.

Thanks for this sight, i served 69-70-71 at the 539th in Phu loi. I was in charge of the turbine engine shop and i flew on some recovery missions with some of my buddies at pipesmoke. When the 539th stood down i was moved to the 605th but i was a few months of getting out so i worked very little, i had some pilots that would look me up because they liked the way that i rigged the choppers but that was about it. Our daughter got out my slides last year and put them on a disk and then found music that was in back them and put it in the background. I was proud to have served with so many great guys, and even lost a classmate at Phug Vinh. Again thank you.

Thanks for the pics. Old memories for sure. 147th ASH (assult support helicopter co.)out of Vung Tau 66/67. Phu Loi during opperation Junction City (lived in tents on the air field). Vung Tau beach was called "Back Beach" in my day but it looked the same. For some other good photos of VN check out the 147th hillclimber web site. I've contributed a few pics to them. My grandfather was a supervisor of the mess hall at the 2nd Battalion, 13th Artillery Regiment at Phu Loi during the war. He was and American and his last name was Schmid or Smith. My dad and I have been trying to search for my grandfather since 1992 when we came to America under the Amerasian program. I came across these pictures and my dad immediately recognize the familiar landmarks. Thank you very much for these pictures. I was stationed with the 605th from Nov 1966 to about June 1967. I was transfered to Tan San Nhut just before they had some artillery rounds fall short on the compound. I was very fortunate. I'm pushing 60 now and my tv went on the blink. I was sitting here thinking about Viet Nam and I'm sure glad I did this search. Thanks again.

Thank you for these really great photos. I was born in 1954 and so a little too young to be brought in for the war but fate somehow got hold of me and I made my first visit to Vietnam in 1988. I have been living and working here full time since 1994. Some places havn't changed since you were here but you would not recognize Vung Tau even since 1998. The government razed all the girlie bars on the back beach and made a beautiful park. With the help of oil money, Vung Tau has gotten quite wealthy and become really a beautiful place. Believe it or not even high rise luxury condos are sprouting up down there.

Great pictures of the 605th . I was there from mid 70 to 71 . I was p 68 F 20 aircraft electrician. Spc 5 Mann was there at your time in charge of the elec shop . Capt Fight ,X/O W/O 1 Edelman got to fly with him quite a bit to scratch out those red X,s & /s from maint recs. Thanks for the site .

David, My name is Bill Williams, I was a 1LT in the 605th from 2/68-2/69. and I admit that I barely recall knowing you during that time. To my total surprise I found your website today after putting in a Google search, while I was on holding on the telephone for a business call. WOW! Surprise is not the word, seeing all these familiar photos and the hangar and aircraft is stunning. But then, I finally get to page 7 and there I am, Christmas eve, in our little "O" club, Sam to my right (left in photo and he was my roommate). my buddy Daryl, Phil Duffy in the background, later one of my groomsmen after we both returned home, Major Vosel the "old man" and Charlie bartending. Remarkably I have several other photos, taken the same night, and they are so similar they must be from the same roll of film. Although in my photos the members of the group, especially me, are a little more "festive". Couldn't have been the Jack Daniels??? I live in Atlanta now and we have an organization called the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association, very non political, dedicated to honoring those lost in service and demonstrating a positive image of the Vietnam Vets.
