IMG_1830_St._Ivo_dome interior

Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza is a Roman Catholic church in Rome
located just across from the eastern side of Pza. Navona at 40, Corso del Rinascimento;
The church was built between 1642-1660 by the architect Francesco Borromini
who was a rival of Gianlorenzo Bernini during the mid 17th c.
St. Ivo, (as it is commonly known), is widely regarded a masterpiece of Roman Baroque architecture and of Borromini's style.

The church is somewhat difficult to locate, as it is a "hidden gem" behind a great wall bordering the street.
Within the walls. a huge courtyard leads to the entrance of the church which is seldom open to the public, so wise to
check locally to see current opening times, which usually are on Sunday mornings.

The ceiling of the dome shown here, reflects the "monte" or triple mountain insignia of the Chigi family,
for whom the church was constructed. This insignia is easily seen above the central window in the picture above.
This insignia also looks a little like the papal tiera of the Chigi Pope Alexander VIII.
