IMG_4177 The church of San Lorenzo .jpg

In 1419, Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici commissioned Brunelleschi to build a new Rrenaissance church to replace an older Romanesque church.
The Brunelleschian church of San Lorenzo seen here, was the family church of the Medici family,
and is situated in the old market district of Florence, very near the Medci Palace.
It is also the burial place of all the principle members of the Medici family.

The church looks totally unfinished, because the facade and marbles for the exterior of the structure were never realized,
and the exterior looks exactly as it did upon the completion of the interiors in 1440.
Although Michelangelo later designed a marble facade for the church in 1517, it was never built,
partially because Michelangelo was called upon for other commissions such as the New Sacristy
for the dici tombs adjoinning San Lorenzo, and the "Last Judgment" on the North wall of the Sistine Chapel,
So to this day, the church of San Lorenzo remains wihout exterior decor, though it is one of the largest
churches in FLorence, as wasll as one of the most prestigious.
