IMG_2936 NIcolas de Stael "Orchestra" .jpg

A young woman settled here into study this large abstraction by Nicolas de Stael, from ca 1953.
I was totally intrigued by de Stael's representation of the subject, since I played in a regional symphony
for 18 years.
Even abstracted, and in a thick impasto, the colors (or lack thereof) evokes the feeling of dozens of musicians melding into one body of sound,
with the conductor in black, being the leading element for the orchestra, shown somewhat less distinctly.
The audience on the left, shows the only color in the image.
I especially liked the bass fiddle in the upper right of the composition, which (being a violinist) I always thought would be great fun to play.

The abstraction of these elements brings memories of many hundreds of hours of great joy making music,
both for my enjoyment, and hopefully for the pleasure of others as well.
This painting makes me happy !
