When I first started going to the Louvre in the mid-1970's, it was a tired, somewhat dingy place, difficult to negotiate due to dim corridors and stairwells.
In the past few years, the Louvre has undergone some dramatic transformations, including the fabulous I.M. Pei glass pyramid
built in the courtyard in the 1980's.
In the interim, most of the poorly lit stairwells have been replaced by well lit escalators in most areas,
galleries reorganized, and collections greatly expanded in many areas.
But it is still a daunting museum to negotiate, even with the maps showing the hundreds of galleries and corridors.
