Bologna Arcaded Sidewalk.jpg

Bologna is famous for its arcaded sidewalks throughout the city.
They protect walkers from the elements at all times of the year, and allow people to reach most all points in the central part of the city.
There are reported to be 17 to 24 miles of these arcades, many dating back to the Middle Ages,
when they were built high enough to accommodate a rider on a horse.

Originally these arcades were made of wood, but have most have been replaced by stone,
except for one, the arcade of Casa Isolani in Strada Maggiore, which is still made of wood.
The arcades not only offer protection from the elements, but provide an interesting play of light and shadow
that change according to the seasons , as well as time of day.
