Acropolis - Parthenon from the North side .jpg

A view of the Parthenon from the North side shows much of the ongoing restoration efforts.
The "patchwork" stone seen in some of the columns makes visible lighter colored modern restoration material interspersed with the original marble
so that the viewer will always know which parts are original to the structure.

The Parthenon is considered the epitome of perfection of the Doric Order, and displays many subtle "refinements" that contribute to its perfect proportions.
Unless specifically pointed out, these refinements go virtually un-noticed. For example, each column shows "entasis" or a subtle swelling of the column in the middle which makes the tall columns appear straight to the eye.
Additionally, refinements such as a slight swelling in the center of the Parthenon's base, keep the structure visually level.

Current restoration and conservation efforts have been ongoing for some years, and scaffolding and heavy lifting equipment seen in this image are part of the Parthenon's 20th- 21st century persona.
While this seems an intrusion to some tourists, it is good to know that this most elegant structure which is part of our world's cultural history, is being cared for and preserved, hopefully for eternity.
I find the contrast of the ancient architecture and modern technology a very happy union !

Note the photographer in the foreground taking a picture of his girl with the Parthenon as a background... the essential tourist photo!
