St. Denis is the burial place with few exceptions, of most of the Kings of France.
In the 12th c., The Abbot Suger of St. Denis (a highly influential political figure) , transformed the abbey into a masterpiece of early Gothic art.
Suger rebuilt the church using a new architectural technique of cross-ribbed vaults, which enabled the use of stained glass to fill the church with light.
Suger's chevet, located behind the altar and choir area, is a series of chapels uninterrupted by wallls, flooding the area with colored iight from the stained glass windows.
The church and crypt contain the burial places of 42 French kings, 32 Queens,
63 Princes and Princesses, and 10 other great men of French history.
Most people are fascinated by the memorial statues of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI
who were beheaded in the French Revolution. This is seen in the next image.
