Yes, My friend is riding in a helmet. No they are not required. My friend took a bad fall off a young paint while riding out in a corn field. She busted her leg badly and had to climb back on to get back home for help. I highly recommend helmets especially when riding on cement or rocky areas when horses have shoes on that are slippery!
