Plums, But Only..

For Birds.. Their diameter is 3,5 - 4 cm - the seed is similar to an apple's seed, tiny - not a stone as in plums or cherries usually.. The fruit is hard even when it is ripe.. dark red inside..

To Fong and Paco: You CAN eat them, but they don't taste very good... the flowers and the fruit are meant mainly for decoration
(like those apple trees which get tiny, hard "apples" which look lovely but cannot be eaten by people). If anybody knows the English name of this tree, please tell me! My dictionaries did not help me!

Have you tried making jam or plum sauce with them? Maybe prunus
salicina but I'm only guessing - do you know it as a Japanese plum?
Its a beautiful shot Ceya!

Pretilly composed and looking ready to eat. After reading your description, I guess I do not want any. Sure are pretty, though. :-)

I did have another thought, Ceya. We have wild cherry trees with fruit that color, but the cherries are only a fraction the size of plums. No one I know eats the cherries because they are very sour and bitter. There are also fruit bearing trees called buckthorns, but their fruit becomes soft as it ripens, whereas the ones in your photo seem hard. Can you tell me the approximate diameter of the fruit? The photo is a good close up, but I'm having trouble estimating its actual size.

What a paradox! Pretty leaves, gorgeous fruit---but never to be eaten. It sounds like a lesson from a morality play or ancient Greek myth. The tree you mentioned---beautiful, copious flowers, but tiny apples, incredibly sour and hard, that's certainly what in English we call a crab apple tree. I have a lovely one in front of my house. But I've never encountered a plum tree like that. Nor have I ever seen a crab apple with purple fruit. I imagine if you had its botanical name it would be an easy search, but I'll keep an eye out. Thanks very much for sharing such an exotic fruit tree. I'm quite curious.
