I've had some questions regarding this shot...here's how it was done:
I caught a large housefly and placed it in Tupperware, and put that in the 'fridge. While the bug was chilling, I set up a temp studio with two flashes, one with a large diffuser, and the other with a red gel. I positioned the main light (diffuser) at around 12-o'clock, and the red gel flash was placed below an elevated sheet of glass, off to the side.
After about 20 minutes, the fly was properly slowed down, and I took it out and placed it on the elevated glass, with the one flash above and one below. I managed to bang off a few shots before it flew away. I used a 105 Sigma macro lens with 56mm of extension tubes.
It was a lot of fun to shoot, and became the anchor shot of this series.
Gotta love photography.
