Wow. That's spectacular. (Voted.) Did you use extension tubes for this one? It looks like a good bit more than 1:1 magnification.
I've never been able to get that up close and personal with a butterfly. They fly away first. The most detail I've gotten is out of a cicada - they are slow and stupid. See this image @http://www.pbase.com/duncanc/image/29153445
