Smith Monument Rededication at Star Island

For the 400th anniversary of Captain John Smith's exploration and mapping of New England, the existing memorial on the southeastern ledges of Star Island was restored and rededicated. The Samuel P. Hunt foundation provided a grant for the repairs.

Formal rededication took place on August 22, 2014. The group voyaged out on the M/V Thomas Laighton; we gathered in the Gosport chapel to hear the speakers and see a photograph of the restored monument unveiled; then we gathered under a tent in the stone village to watch the unveiling of the actual monument from a distance; which just left time for the voyage back, for those who were not staying for the afternoon (the weather was cloudy, breezy, and cool).
