The Fort Stark revival began in May, 2007, as a result of
an informal conversation at the Thursday Men's Coffee Group (in
New Castle).
The police informed us of what an attractive nuisance Fort Stark
had become for vandalism and drug dealing because of the visible
neglect of the site.
Many of us went for a tour and over the remainder of the summer
a group of volunteers came together under the leadership of
Peter Rice, known now as the "Fort Stark Brigade."
Fort Stark is designated as a
State Historic Site in the New Hampshire Parks and
Recreation system and the Fort Stark Brigade works closely with the State.
The improvements are a result of the work
of dozens of local volunteers, selected capital improvements by the State, the donation of money by individuals, and contribution
of labor and materials by a number of businesses.
This work has been publicized in print, television, and by bringing political
leaders to the site to see the results. The gateway to the site is now a Visitor
Center in the red brick building that was known as the Machine Shop and which was
formerly in disarray and with much stored junk.
The photographs in this gallery are by me (Jim Cerny) using primarily a Sony A100 digital
camera (DSLR) with an 18-250mm zoom lens.
The images in these galleries were organized
from time to time and are a subset of all my Fort Stark images. Plus, see also
this
slide show with 47 images from activity in 2007.
