30 August 2007 Little India, Singapore

Fusion Facade

Many old historical buildings were once torn down in the name of change & progress for modern Singapore, but this one had a 2nd lease of life when it was converted into a budget accommodation-cum-pub. I found the combination of traditional chinese roof tiles, the name and the function of the place all very incongruous.

Thanks Tim for sharing the great symbolism you found in this image! Yes, the British certainly did spread its culture when it was expanding its empire. And even though its governance of Singapore ended decades ago, we can still feel its influence today, in the form of commerce.

It does speak eloquently of the British period of spreading its culture everywhere throughout the globe.
