The Way To His Favourite Restaurant

The waterhole near the Treetops Lodge has dried-up in patches, leaving channels of water that resemble little paths zig-zagging across the mud-cracked landscape. As night draws near, this marabou stork heads out for probably his last meal of the day, foraging through the maze of shallow water channels.

This is a wondrous shot of the scavening marabou stork, wading and reflected in rainwater, a study in opportunism, drought, and starkness. It feels like the bird has found the ribs of the earth left exposed and drying, and is busy picking at any stray bits that remain. I saw these huge birds in Kenya when I was there in '70 and felt thankful to them, despite their lack of beauty: they clean up death, functioning as efficient inhibitors of disease, as well as eating large amounts of insect and animal pests.
