Double Daggers

I managed to photograph the profile of two adult rhinos walking together to accentuate the shape and sharpness of their horns. If an encounter with one rhino was scary enough, imagine double the trouble!

Thank you Phil for your wonderful observations here. I think I was very lucky that I had such a wonderfully dramatic backdrop to use when we encountered these rhinos. These trees at Lake Nakuru are truly enchanting, even by themselves, but they lend a very insidious atmosphere at this particular time of day when darkness starts to descend, turning them into twisted masses grey. I feel that this wooded backdrop was a crucial element in helping to express the trecherous mood that surrounded these dangerous animals.

What makes this image work so well is that the rhinos form but one layer among several. The foreground grasses partially screen them from us -- they rise over them in almost prehistoric grandeur. The twisted forest of dead trees that make up the background layer make this image timeless. Many wildlife images suffer from a lot of useless sky in the background -- but you have given us a wooded background that matches both the color and mood of the rhinos.
