Slaves spent their whole lives in dark chambers like these, quarrying stone for Carthaginians and their grand buildings. This industry continued under the Roman and Byzantine empires. My lens wasn't wide enough to see the entire chamber , but perhaps this has worked to my advantage. The lines that form the triangle cut into the frame, creating a sense of tension, discomfort and pain - feelings that the slaves surely endured during their miserable existence in these hell holes. A small opening above casts some light down into the void and the darkness, offering a ray of hope, but it is obscure from view - a sign that freedom remained out of reach for many of the slaves.
