10 March 2003 Byrsa Hill, Tunis

Cathedral of St.Louise

This cathedral was built in the 1890s on the spot where St Louis (King Louis IX of France) died while participating in a crusade in 1270, in an effort to convert a muslim Hafsid ruler. Although the Tunisians may have every reason to disapprove of it, it still stands like a proud monument on top of Byrsa Hill - no longer as a church though, but as a cultural centre.
