30-APR-2006 Paul Nicholas

Welsh Borders Morris Dancer
by Paul Nicholas

Upton-upon-Severn Folk Festival 2006.

This dancer told me that traditionally these people were agricultural workers who would travel the pubs of an evening to perform (beg) for beer money.

To avoid recognition and the sack from their day job, they would black up their faces. They'd also wear their jackets inside out, and sew on coloured patches, for the same reason.

this is great--I just wish the hat (and feather) wasn't cut off... but still a great catch.
