This was during the Lunar eclipse. That's why the moon is dark. Lack of detail is from the cloudy night.

With no disrespect, this image seem dark and out of focus. I'm considering the Sigma 50-500mm but not if this is the best it can do. Did you use a tripod and spend time trying to get good focus?
