Thank you all for the kind comments. I used a long lens to get the really close shots, but it wasn't hard to get them at all. The area is a landfill area, and this portion is right at the end near the spot that active dumping still takes place, so I don't think people really get to this end much. However, you can walk or bicycle right out through the nesting area. The only thing stopping you is a small sign warning that it is an environmentally sensitive area. Being moderately environmentally sensitive ourselves, we tried not to disturb the birds. Anyway, when we got too close they make so much noise with the screeching that it's kinda frightening. You can get pretty close to them before they will leave their nest unprotected though. They flap and screech and try to scare you away, which means they lift off their nests a little allowing you to get shots of the eggs.
