Ever since we had two successful tiny hummers grow from eggs to great big adults, I have been wanting to show you the close proximity of their little egg cup nest.
This was shot the day the last two babies made their way into the world (near the end of March). This image also displays the lovely white streaks that were shot out of the nest and landed on the kitchen window... Initially it wasn't too bad. However, after they ate more solid food, it was sort of a nuisance.. There is nothing I would have minded, for the gifts of honor and sheer joy I experienced, at any hour of the day or night, when I was in the kitchen, this little family was sailing their gondola (reminded me of a hot air balloon) bravely through the rainstorms in Feb. and March. Hummer Mothers are so dedicated and brilliant. Our Patio roof is waterproof.. The little egg cup would spin like crazy when the wind caught the metal Elk on top of the ring. Like the teacup rides at Disneyland, around and around.
If you look closely, you can see a reluctant wee bird sitting on top of the ring. His sibling left mid-morning. This little guy sat on that ring all day and all through the night. I felt so bad for him.. The night before he was jamed in the tiny nest feather to wing with his sibling. This was in March, and it was cold outside. I put a lamp in the window for company for him. He was still there the next morning.. Mama still came to feed and encourage him... and Happily about noon, he made his first flight to another chime. He had a tuff time trying to figure how my Hummingbird feeder works. I saw this bird, for quite a few weeks, still being fed by Mama, who was smaller and thinner than this one :).. I believe his Mother was one of the babies from the first batch of eggs that hatched Feb. 14, 05. I have my movie camera in this shot as it was terrific for captureing mid flight feedings.
I sat and stood on that sink for hours on end... Ah the sacrifices Grandmas sometimes make :))
