Spotted Salamander - Ambystoma maculatum

Sussex County, NJ

These salamanders always look well-fed. Like Blue-spotted and Jefferson, Spotted Salamanders are ambystomatid (mole) salamanders, a family which includes Tiger Salamander, the largest terrestrial salamander in North America (up to 13 inches long). The Spotted is the second largest member of the group: the record is almost 10 inches.
