After the initial data are collected, the snake is handed off to an observer. The observer places the snake on the sand and leaves it undisturbed for several minutes. During this time, all behavior is observed and recorded: tongue flicking, hissing, striking, slithering, or tail rattling. Since the snakes are still technically in hibernation when they are taken out, most are slow to move at first. This picture was taken in the morning, when it was still quite cool (mid 40's or so).
