Photos of a journey with Sabah State Railway from Kota Kinabalu to Beaufort. I caught the regular, scheduled train rather than the evocatively named North Borneo Railway - a tourist train - because the state railways train goes twice as far for a fraction of the cost and you do not have to book in advance. Most of my fellow passengers were tourists so they evidently thought along similar lines.
The train's windows could not be opened and were dirty on the outside so my photos were taken through glass and a haze of dirt.
The railway line goes south of Kota Kinabalu to Beaufort, then further inland to Tenom. Services between Beaufort and Tenom are not coordinated with those along the longer coastal route so for most passengers the journey ends at Beaufort.
It's shorter and only mildly interesting by comparison - less exotic, less "ethnic" - and being unable to take decent photos out the windows is frustrating. But it is still worth doing if you're in the area and don't expect too much.
