This gossling was from a family of 7 eggs which six had hatched on May 22nd. What we do not understand is that when this photo was taken there were 6 gossling and one egg found in the nest. When the mother and father left for a swim they arrived back with 7 little ones! The 7th egg was still in tact in the nest.
Another strange behaviour which I have witnessed over the past four years while tracking this one family has been that while the family goes for a swim another pair of geese arrives to take over the nest. Father goose has never been impressed with this and has quickly chased the new pair away.
This year, the family arrived back to rest on the nest for the night on the 23rd, but left the nest for good on the 24th. The final egg was either stolen by kids or by an animal but our feeling is that it was removed by kids.
