For the last part of our trip we traveled 5 hours by van to Coca, on Río Napo to board a large motorized canoe which would take us to Sacha Lodge, in Amazonia. Oscar Tapuy, Sacha's expert bird guide immediately began finding us new birds along the river, and did not stop until we left him 4 days later. After exiting the river canoe we hiked the 1 km boardwalk (a long walk with several detours to find some great birds) to another dock on the glasslike Pilchicocha Lake. There we boarded a small canoe which was paddled by our second guide, Pablo. There followed a silent canoe trip across the blackwater lake and through the area of 'false mangroves'. We had our first look at the magnificent Hoatzins, and the huge eyes of a Boat-billed Heron watched as we glided under his perch. That was our magical introduction to a spectacular place. The lodge is very comfortable, the food is good and the staff go out of their way to make it the experience of a lifetime.
