This mute swan pose reminds me of Hans Christian Anderson's "The Ugly Duckling." He looks like he's just discovered that he's no longer the ugly duckling. At the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge, we seldom have the swans in close. They are normally a white dot on the other side of the main pool. This year I've had both the trumpeter and tundra's in close. We don't see wild mute swans there, that often. They are certainly an elegant and graceful bird. I photographed this one preening for about 15 minutes.
