Nemrut Dag at Sunrise
Stone lion to the right of the site.
This is Herakles, or Hercules to us. Looks more like a yard gnome to me.
On either side of the gods, there was an eagle and a lion.
Goddess of Kommagene. She is wearing a head dress covered in fruit.
A lion made of basalt with the sunrise.
Apollo, Goddess of Kommagene, Zeus, King Antiochus I, Herakles.
Eagle and lion. Notice the rain clouds? We had rain in the middle of the arid mountains.
These are the statues the heads were sitting on before they were toppled in ancient times by earthquakes.
West side: this lion and bird were made of black basalt.
I think this one is Zeus--another yard gnome.
These slabs were once standing. There were more but I think the best have been moved to a museum.
Herakles on the west side.
Eagle on the west side. The holes must have something to do with raising the statues.
View of the northern landscape beyond the site.
Kommagene Goddess--you can see some grapes and pomegranates in her head dress.
Apollo. The side that gets the sun is much more weathered from the extremes of cold and heat.
That little speck on the horizon is Bob. He made me climb the mountain twice. It's 7,000 ft high so it was hard to breath.
