A large majestic woodpecker. With a length up to 43 cm it's the second largest in Thailand. Quite common and if you look for it in he right places you will find it. So far I've seen it at Nam Nao NP (on the dirt road to Phu Goom Khao) and at Huay Kha Kaeng Wildlife Sanctuary (on the access road and at the campsite) in open pine forest. Its loud drumming is easy to home in on, but it's a shy bird which will take off as soon as it sees you.
