Santa Croce di Gerusalemme Basilica

Rome.31b.jpg

This church is located on its namesake Piazza at the end of Via Carlo Felice.

Perhaps the most important of the three minor basilicas, this has been known since the Middle Ages as the 'basilica of the relics' due to the
great number of mementos of saints and martyrs it contains. It's official name derives from the soil of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem brought
here by Constantine's mother Helena and placed - together with the precious relics of the Cross and the Passion of Christ - in a hall of her
private home, the Sessorian Palace. This was later converted into a church and completely rebuilt in the 12th century by Pope Lucius II.
