The Tour de France

We were lucky enough to see four stages of the Tour de France, one more than we originally thought we would. It’s a huge sporting event whose scale almost—but not quite—matches the scale of the terrain it travels through. There were people literally from all over the world camped out and waiting—sometimes for days—for the golden 10-30 minutes when the riders would be passing. I did not find anybody by the roadside who was not excited to be there and willing to be friendly and share in the good times.

The sight of enough people to fill a city all climbing up onto the flanks of the mountains to watch the race go by is incredible. So is the sight of all of them trying to get back down after the racers have gone by. The crowds that took days to filter up onto the high roads now all stream down at once, with pedestrians, cars, and bicycles all jockeying for advantage in a stream of humanity that turns into a race in itself.
